AEDs can be used to treat sudden cardiac arrest.
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a condition that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. Without treatment, this can lead to death in just a few minutes. However, with early intervention and use of a defibrillator, the survival rate can be increased to as high as 50%. That’s why is extremely important that police have both the training of how to use a AED and have the AED it self.
Police officers need to know how and when to use an AED.
Although many officers receive CPR and first aid training, fewer than half of all states require this training as part of graduated police officer licensing. Many departments do not offer continuing medical education that includes CPR or basic first aid. While CPR can worn in some of these sudden situations a police officer might face while on shift. An AED automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac and then shocks the heart with electrical therapy to restore a normal rhythm. Although, a few thousand people a year survive sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospitals if CPR is administered immediately, applying an AED allows those to have a better chance to survive these cardiac events.
The police department needs to ensure that all their patrol cars have access to the appropriate equipment, such as an AED, oxygen tank, and defibrillator.
With the addition of a AED and these other resources they have a better chance of making a difference in someone’s life. As in many cases police are first on the scene of an emergency. And having an AED and the knowledge and ability to use one can help stabilize someone long enough for EMS to get to their destination and provide further care. AED’s give the police department a more of an opportunity to save lives and help American citizens who suffer from sudden cardiac arrest.
There needs to be clear guidelines on what types of situations warrant the use of these devices by law enforcement officials
The use of AEDs by police is becoming more common as the importance of early defibrillation becomes better understood. Many lives have been saved by police officers using these devices when other first responders are not available or are on their way.
